The U.S. clean energy sector experienced significant growth in 2024, with employment increasing at a rate more than three times faster than the national average. According to the latest Clean Jobs America report by the national, nonpartisan business group E2, nearly 100,000 new clean energy jobs were added last year, bringing the total number of clean energy workers in the U.S. to approximately 3.56 million.
Sector-wide employment gains
The clean energy industry encompasses a broad range of sectors, including solar, wind, energy storage, and electric vehicle infrastructure. Collectively, these sectors added approximately 300,000 jobs over the past five years, far surpassing growth in fossil fuel and gas and diesel motor vehicle sectors. In 2024, clean energy jobs accounted for more than 7% of all new jobs added in the U.S. and 82% of all new energy sector jobs.
Regional employment trends
Southern states led the nation in clean energy job creation. Texas and Virginia alone added 41,000 clean energy jobs in 2024. Western and Northeastern states collectively added more than 20,000 jobs, indicating a nationwide trend toward renewable energy adoption.
Economic implications
The rapid growth of clean energy employment not only supports the transition to a more sustainable energy infrastructure but also stimulates local economies. The influx of jobs in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance of renewable energy systems provides economic opportunities and contributes to community development.
Future outlook
Looking ahead, the clean energy sector is poised for continued growth. Advancements in technology, coupled with supportive policies and increasing public demand for sustainable energy solutions, are expected to drive further job creation and economic benefits in the coming years.
As the U.S. continues to prioritize clean energy initiatives, the sector’s expansion will play a crucial role in achieving national environmental goals and fostering a resilient economy.
